Netflix has dropped the teaser trailer for 13 Reasons Why, the upcoming teen series based on the best-selling book by Jay Asher.

Selena Gomez, one of the show’s executive producers, was first to release the teaser below, which hints at the dark plot set to unfold in the 13-episode run. 13 Reasons Why tells of Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette), who one day comes home from school to finds cassette tapes recorded by his classmate and crush, Hannah Baker (Aussie newcomer Katherine Langford), who took her own life a couple of weeks earlier. In the recordings, Hannah tells of the 13 people that drove her to suicide.

It certainly sounds like a downer of a premise, but it all comes down to how well this mystery unravels and the ultimate punchlines it hits. Tom McCarthy, director of the Best Picture-winning Spotlight, is at the helm, which could mean that this ain’t your run-of-the-mill teen-mystery fluff. We’ll see.

13 Reasons Why hits Netflix on March 31 (US date).
