2025 Oscar Nominations List: Emilia Pérez, The Brutalist, and Wicked Leading the Films

The 97th Academy Awards nominations have been announced, with French-Spanish musical Emilia Pérez leading the pack with an impressive 13 nominations. The film has broken the record for the most nods ever received by a non-English-language picture.

Hot on its heels are Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist and Jon M. Chu’s Wicked, each with ten nominations. Corbet’s sweeping post-World War II epic earned nods across acting, writing, and technical categories, while Wicked, the vibrant adaptation of the Broadway smash, garnered recognition for its leads Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, alongside a host of craft nominations. Meanwhile, James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, surprised many by securing eight nominations, including acting nods for Timothée Chalamet, Edward Norton, and Monica Barbaro.

This year’s nominations brought their fair share of surprises. Two international films, Emilia Pérez and Brazil’s I’m Still Here, earned spots in both the Best Picture and Best International Feature categories—a rarity. While Emilia Pérez was widely expected to dominate, I’m Still Here, a politically charged Brazilian drama, was a more unexpected addition to the Best Picture lineup. And it’s great to see the Academy recognising a horror film; The Substance has an impressive five nominations, including a Best Picture nod.

Conclave, Edward Berger’s papal thriller, scored eight nominations but missed out on a Best Director nod for Berger, echoing a similar oversight he faced with All Quiet on the Western Front. Similarly, Wicked, despite its ten nominations, saw its director Jon M. Chu left off the Best Director list.

While Demi Moore’s momentum from her Golden Globe win for The Substance positioned her as a frontrunner in Best Actress, the absence of Nicole Kidman (Babygirl) and Angelina Jolie (Maria) has raised some eyebrows. Succession fans will appreciate the Supporting Actor face off that finds Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain) and Jeremy Strong (The Apprentice) going head to head.
