The 2026 Academy Awards delivered a night of big wins, historic firsts, and a few genuine surprises. Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another emerged as the evening’s biggest winner, while Sinners, Hamnet, Sentimental Value, and KPop Demon Hunters also had major moments. Before we get to the full list of nominees and winners below, along with videos of a number of the acceptance speeches, here’s a quick look at the biggest takeaways from this year’s Oscars.

One Battle After Another Leads the Night

One Battle After Another came out on top with six Oscars, taking Best Picture, Best Director for Paul Thomas Anderson, Adapted Screenplay, Editing, Supporting Actor for Sean Penn, and the Academy’s newly introduced Casting award.

It was a particularly notable night for Anderson, who had previously been nominated for films including Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood, and Phantom Thread without winning. This year finally changed that. In one of his speeches, Anderson said he wrote the film for his children as an apology for “the housekeeping mess we left in this world we’re handing off to them,” adding that he hoped a younger generation could help restore “common sense and decency.”

Sinners and Other Major Winners

Much of the season had shaped up as a contest between One Battle After Another and Sinners, with the latter entering the ceremony on a record 16 nominations. It ultimately won four Oscars: Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan, Original Screenplay, Original Score, and Cinematography. That cinematography win was historic, with Autumn Durald Arkapaw becoming the the first woman to win the award.

Elsewhere, Jessie Buckley won Best Actress for Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet, becoming the first Irish winner of the award. Amy Madigan took Best Supporting Actress for Weapons, while Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value won Best International Feature, marking Norway’s first victory in that category.

Mr. Nobody Against Putin landed Best Documentary Feature in one of the night’s more unexpected wins, and Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters took Animated Feature and Original Song, with “Golden” becoming the first K-pop song to win an Oscar.

Technical Wins, Surprises, and Shutouts

Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein collected three craft awards for Production Design, Costume Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling. Avatar: Fire and Ash won Visual Effects, while F1 took Sound.

The night also featured a rare tie in Live Action Short, only the seventh tie in Oscars history. On the other side of the ledger, some heavily nominated titles walked away with nothing, including nine-time nominee Marty Supreme, along with Bugonia, Train Dreams, and The Secret Agent.

Conan O’Brien Returns as Host

Conan O’Brien returned for his second year as host, once again steering the ceremony with a mix of industry jokes, political commentary, and general chaos. The show also included tributes to late screen figures including Rob Reiner, Catherine O’Hara, Diane Keaton, and Robert Redford.

It was also a strong overall showing for Warner Bros., which finished the night with 11 Oscars across its films, including its first Best Picture win since Argo in 2013.
