Take a look at the first trailer for 28 Years Later, the long-anticipated third entry in the 28 Days Later universe that director Danny Boyle and Alex Garland kicked off in 2002. If the intense, blood-slicked footage is anything to go by, the duo have another harrowing exploration of survival and humanity on the brink. Oh, and this one was shot on using an iPhone 15 Pro Max. Take a look at the trailer for the horror film above and the first posters below.
Nearly three decades after the Rage Virus devastated the UK, the new film introduces us to a remote island community surviving under a fragile semblance of order. Armed with bows and arrows and cut off from the infected mainland by a single fortified causeway, this isolated group clings to life—until their fragile peace is shattered. The trailer teases visceral thrills as one survivor ventures back to the mainland, uncovering horrors that extend beyond the infected, with mutated zombies and humanity’s darker instincts taking centre stage. Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) and Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Bullet Train) lead the cast, alongside Jack O’Connell, Erin Kellyman, and Ralph Fiennes.
The trailer has a number of pause-worthy moments, but one particular shot is stirring fans into a bit of a frenzy. There’s a chilling glimpse of a zombie (okay, an “infected,” if you want to get technical) that many are speculating could be Jim, Cillian Murphy’s character from 28 Days Later. Murphy, who serves as an executive producer this time around, is notably absent from the cast list—but could the speculation be true? If so, that’s one hell of a way to bring back the character – even for what could be one crazy (and depressing?) scene.
Adding to the excitement, 28 Years Later is not just a one-off return to the franchise. The film was shot back-to-back with a sequel: the fourth instalment of the franchise, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, directed by Nia DaCosta (The Marvels).
28 Years Later arrives in Australian cinemas on 19 June and US cinemas 20 June 2025.
