AACTA 2021 International Awards – Movies & TV Nominations: ‘Nomadland’ and ‘Promising Young Woman’ Among Top Picks for Australian Academy

Nomadland and Promising Young Woman are among the top picks for the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA), who have today announced the nominees for the 10th AACTA International Awards.

Nomadland received the most nominations with 6 nods, including Best Picture, Director (Chloé Zhao) and Actress (Frances McDormand). Fellow Best Film nominees: Minari, The Father, Promising Young Woman and The Trial of the Chicago 7.

The film acting nominees include Chadwick Boseman for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Gary Oldman for Mank, Vanessa Kirby for Pieces of a Woman, and Carey Mulligan for Promising Young Woman, among others.

For the first time, the AACTA’s International Awards are also focusing on television. The Best Series noms include Netflix hits such as The Queen’s Gambit and The Crown, as well as HBO shows The Undoing and I May Destroy You, the latter of which was being named by a number of outlets as a potential snub at this year’s Golden Globes nominations.

“2020 was an extraordinary year for the global screen industry,” said AACTA CEO Damian Trewhella. “We all experienced varying degrees of lockdowns but one thing that united us all was the enjoyment and escapism we got from film and television and audiences devoured content in astonishing numbers. Shows like Normal People, The Crown, The Mandalorian, I May Destroy You and Schitt’s Creek were watched across the world and our own productions like Mystery Road stood up alongside the best.

Trewhella also commended the amount of work the Aussie were putting in this year, saying, “Creatives like Margot Robbie who produced the black comedy thriller, Promising Young Woman, Tony McNamara who created The Great, Babyteeth’s Eliza Scanlen and Ben Mendelsohn, Mrs America’s Cate Blanchett and The Undoing’s Nicole Kidman also continued to showcase the abounding contribution Australians make to the international screen industry.”

The AACTA International Awards are held in Los Angeles. This year, with international travel quite difficult during the pandemic, the AACTA says it will have a highlights package of acceptance speeches up on its YouTube channel on Saturday 6 March AEDT / Friday 5 March PST.
