Absolutely Fabulous, BBC’s classic comedy-series, is headed to the big screen. Jennifer Saunders, creator and star of the television series (pictured left), has announced that she is set to write the screenplay for the film version.
The show followed Saunders as Edina Monsoon, a heavy-drinking, drug-abusing PR agent who spent her time trying to stay young and “hip”. She was joined in her quest by her best friend Patsy Stone (Joanna Lumley), whose drug and alcohol abuse easily surpassed Edina’s.
Saunders made the announcement during an appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show. The idea that this show could be made into a film has been circulating for some time, but, according to The Wrap, Saunders previously expressed her concern “about sullying the acidic gem’s legacy by breaking out the martini glasses for another go-round.”
In a report released by Yahoo!Movies, Saunders spoke about her decision to make the film, saying, “Yes, well I have to do it now because I’ve threatened to a lot. And then Joanna Lumley kept announcing it and saying, ‘Yes, she’s going to do it,’ and then Dawn French on our radio show at Christmas said, ‘I bet £100,000 that you don’t write it,’ so now I have to write it, otherwise I have to pay her £100,000.”
Fans of the series will no doubt be excited to see what Edina and Patsy get up to in their first big-screen outing.
