Following its huge debut on Netflix, Adolescence could be getting a second chapter. Plan B Entertainment, Brad Pitt’s production company, has confirmed they’re in early talks about a possible new season.
Speaking with Deadline, Plan B co-heads Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner said they’ve been in conversation with director Philip Barantini about the future of the show, which stars and was co-created by Stephen Graham. “We’re thinking about how we can widen the aperture, stay true to its DNA [and] not be repetitive,” Gardner explained.
The team is hoping to bring Graham and writer Jack Thorne back into the fold. Pitt, who helped pitch the project and gave notes on the script, was heavily involved from the outset. “Brad is a massive fan of Stephen’s,” Kleiner said, noting the actor’s enthusiasm behind the scenes.
Adolescence tackles a number of issues, including the dangers of online radicalisation, gender dynamics, and youth violence – and every episode is shot in a striking one-take format. “Phil’s style of doing the episodes in one take is not a gimmick. It’s very much in conversation with the subject matter,” Gardner said, explaining how the approach forced viewers to confront the story without turning away. “Our theory was, what would happen if you couldn’t look away? And will that make the subject embed in you in a different way? That was a thrilling thing.”
