Get ready for dark comedy series After Life, created, directed and executive produced by Ricky Gervais.
The Netflix series, which will consist of six half-hour episodes, will find Gervais playing a man whose life changes dramatically following the death of his wife. After considering taking his own life, he decides instead to live on long enough to punish the world by saying and doing whatever he feels like from here on (so, kind of like Gervais in real life then). He thinks of this change in approach – not caring about himself or anyone else – like a superpower, but doesn’t realise that it’s going to be tricky for those around him who are trying to save the nice guy they used to know.
Netflix has officially ordered the series, which marks yet another project between Gervais and the company following the comedy series Derek, the comedy feature Special Correspondents, his stand-up special Humanity and Netflix’s rights acquisition of The Office spinoff film David Brent: Life on the Road.
Also executive producing After Life is Charlie Hanson, Gervais’ longtime producing collaborator whose credits include Extras, Life’s Too Short, Derek and David Brent: Life on the Road.
Gervais tweeted about heading into pre-production on the series a few days ago:
I start pre production on my new Netflix show tomorrow. It's a 6 part, dark comedy, in which I play a man who, after the death of his wife, becomes suicidal but decides to live long enough to punish the world by saying and doing whatever the fuck he likes from now on. pic.twitter.com/7AwmV6rEbd
