Take a look above at the trailer that Netflix has released for American Primeval, a gritty six-episode limited series exploring the American frontier in 1857.
The series stars Taylor Kitsch (The Terminal List) as Isaac, a traumatised man fighting to overcome his inner turmoil while navigating the dangers of a lawless frontier. Joining him is Betty Gilpin (GLOW) as Sara Rowell, a composed and determined woman seeking safe passage for herself and her son, alongside Dane DeHaan (A Cure for Wellness) as Jacob Pratt, a devout Mormon leading his family westward. Shea Whigham (Perry Mason) portrays Jim Bridger, the seasoned owner of a fort that becomes a pivotal setting for many crossing the treacherous terrain.
The large cast also includes Kim Coates as Brigham Young, the determined leader of the Mormon Church; Jai Courtney as Virgil Cutter, a ruthless bounty hunter; and Shawnee Pourier as Two Moons, a resourceful survivor with a fierce will to live.
The story dives into the clash of cultures, the impact of religion, and the sacrifices required to navigate the untamed wilderness. Director and executive producer Peter Berg, known for Friday Night Lights and Lone Survivor, told Netflix site Tudum: “We are very appreciative that Netflix is trusting us to take a big swing with American Primeval. I’m looking forward to taking viewers into the most dynamic, intense, and heart-pounding survival tale humanly possible. We are going into the belly of the beast.”
The series comes from writer Mark L. Smith, whose credits include The Revenant, George Clooney Netflix release The Midnight Sky, and this year’s Twisters, and producer Eric Newman (Narcos). This is the second collaboration between Berg, Newman, and Kitsch, following their work on Painkiller.
American Primeval premieres on Netflix on January 9th.
