Ed and Lorrain Warren will be appearing in the third Annabelle picture.
The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2 stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are set to reprise their roles as the paranormal investigators in the upcoming film, which would make it the first time the characters appear in a Conjuring universe spinoff. Deadline broke the news, reporting that the Warrens will not be lead characters in the film, instead included “in a supporting capacity.”
The third Annabelle picture, and the sixth film in the horror franchise so far, will be kicking off with the Warrens taking the titular possessed doll to their Artifacts room. And wouldn’t you know it? This damned doll can’t give it a rest.
“[Annabelle 3] picks up with the Warrens bringing Annabelle to the place where it can really no longer wreak havoc, which is their artifact room,” Gary Dauberman, the Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation and The Nun screenwriter making his directorial debut with the film, told the crowd at Comic-Con in July. “But, of course, it turns out she can also wreak havoc there. And she really awakens the evil within that room and they target the Warrens’ 10-year-old daughter, Judy. So, that’s the set-up.”
As James Wan – franchise producer and director of the two Conjuring films – puts it: “… It’s basically A Night at the Museum, with Annabelle!”
The film will find 10-year-old Judy fighting off evil with her cousin, who’s babysitting with a friend. Playing Judy is McKenna Grace, whose credits include Gifted (co-starring Chris Evans), I, Tonya (she played a young Tonya Harding), and recently-released Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House.
Don’t expect this franchise to wrap anytime soon. The five films in the Conjuring universe have earned almost $US1.6 billion combined, the biggest chunk coming from the most recent entry, The Nun ($US359. 3 million).
The still-untitled next Annabelle film is set to start shooting this week with a US release date planned for 3 July 2019.
