Warner Bros. is moving forward with a film based on the classic role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons, and The Fault in Our Stars actor Ansel Elgort could be in the lead.
According to Deadline, Elgort has entered negotiations to star in the fantasy film, which is said to be a high priority for the studio.
The long-gestating project was put on hold when Hasbro and Sweetpea Entertainment went to court over who owned the rights to a movie sequel. That case has since been settled.
Attached to direct the film is Rob Letterman, whose credits include Shark’s Tale, Monsters vs. Aliens, and last year’s Jack Black-starring Goosebumps movie. The screenplay has been penned by David Leslie Johnson, who co-wrote James Wan’s successful horror sequel The Conjuring 2.
The role-playing game saw its birth back and 1974 and has since gained a huge following worldwide. The tale tells of a warrior who, along with his band of mystical creatures, heads on a dangerous journey to find a mythical treasure.
Deadline also points out that Vin Diesel may also be on board the new adaptation, considering he’s a huge fan of the game and has been actively campaigning for a part in the project for the past years.
As many may remember, Dungeons and Dragons was adapted into an ill-received film back in 2000. The film was a flop, raking in $US33.8 million worldwide on a budget of $US45 million and earning itself a Rotten Tomatoes score of 10%.
Elgort, also known for his role in the Divergent franchise, will next be seen in Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver, Sacha Gervasi’s drama November Criminals, and the true story crime-drama Billionaire Boys Club.
