There’s a sequel that’s being developed, although Warner Bros. and filmmaker/potential sequel director James Wan are smartly taking their time with it. As of now, it looks like WB is also keen to move ahead with a spinoff film, one that will focus on that dark ocean area where we saw Arthur and Mera taking on deadly amphibious creatures.
As per THR, the studio has hired up and coming screenwriters Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald to write the screenplay for the spinoff. No plot details are available at this time, but the film will reportedly be set in the kingdom of the Trench and won’t be featuring any of the main cast members from Aquaman.
The Trench, which was introduced in DC Comics in 2011, holds beings that were once Atlanteans but evolved into terrifying creatures after they were cut off from other survivors following the sinking of Atlantis.
Aquaman has been a massive hit. The film earned a huge $US1.1 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing DC film thus far – beating even Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. No surprise the studio is looking at how else to expand on its success.
