Aubrey Plaza to Star in Netflix Comedy from ‘The Breaker Upperers’ New Zealand Directors

New Zealand filmmakers Jackie van Beek & Madeleine Sami broke out internationally last year with their comedy The Breaker Upperers, which they directed, wrote and also starred in. No slowing down now.

Netflix, distributor of The Breaker Upperers outside Australia and New Zealand, have announced their second feature film. The duo will next be directing a comedy movie titled Hope, with Aubrey Plaza cast in the lead role.

Plot details haven’t been released for the film, which will be written by Karen McCullah & Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith. McCullah and Smith are certainly well versed in feature comedies, having previously written The House Bunny, Legally Blonde, The Ugly Truth, 10 Things I Hate About You, and She’s the Man, among other films. Hope is said to be a passion project for the writers, who are also attached to the project as executive producers.

Plaza was recently seen in the horror reboot Child’s Play and in the third and final season of FX series Legion.

Here’s a look at the trailer for The Breaker Upperers, which had Taika Waititi as executive producer through his Piki Films banner:
