A big new trailer has landed for Avatar: Fire and Ash, James Cameron’s third trip to Pandora. Watch the trailer above and read on for the essentials.
A Dangerous Na’vi Movement
More on Screen Realm:
Pandora isn’t just battling humans anymore. Varang (Oona Chaplin) leads the Ash People — a hard-line Na’vi clan forged by a volcanic catastrophe and the conviction that fire is “the only pure thing.” Their crusade collides with Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) and family, while Colonel Quaritch (Stephen Lang) finds common cause in spreading the burn. One more wrinkle: Spider (Jack Champion) appears able to breathe Pandora’s air — a game-changer if it’s not a one-off.
Beyond forests and reefs, the world expands to the Wind Traders — sky-roaming Na’vi we’ll see even more of in the fourth film — with David Thewlis debuting as trader Peylak. Expect fresh creatures and clashes across jungle, ocean and sky, plus a Toruk Makto beat designed to make long-time fans sit up.
Cast and Creative Team
Returning cast includes Worthington, Saldaña, Lang, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, Bailey Bass, Britain Dalton, Trinity Bliss, Jack Champion and Edie Falco — plus a Giovanni Ribisi sighting as Parker Selfridge. New faces include Chaplin’s Varang and Thewlis’s Peylak. (Michelle Yeoh, by the way, is set to appear in Avatar 4.)
Cameron returns to write and direct, co-writing with Way of Water scribes Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver; the trio developed the story with Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno. Returning creatives include Way of Water composer Simon Franglen and cinematographer Russell Carpenter.
Avatar’s Box Office Reign
2009’s Avatar still (!) leads the worldwide box office with over US$2.9 billion; Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) reached US$2.3 billion to sit behind Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame (US$2.7 billion). With Way of Water returning to cinemas in October, expect that sequel to inch closer to Endgame’s tally.
Release Date
Avatar: Fire and Ash is scheduled to open in Australian cinemas on December 18 and U.S. cinemas on December 19.
