That’s right, James Cameron’s Avatar sequels are still on the way.
Following a number of delays over the last few years, it appears we have actual release dates to lock in for the four Avatar sequels we’ve been hearing about for so long.
The U.S. release dates for the still-untitled sequels are as follows:
Avatar 2 – December 18, 2020
Avatar 3 – December 17, 2021
Avatar 4 – December 20, 2024
Avatar 5 – December 19, 2025
The release dates were announced via the official Avatar Facebook page in a picture post that read, “Great to be working with the best team in the business! Avatar takes flight as we begin concurrent production on four sequels.” You can check out the picture of Cameron and his large crew below.
So, there you have it. Production has now – just now!? – officially begun on the four sequels, which will be filmed simultaneously in New Zealand over the next few years. Cameron, Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds), Jurassic World scribes Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver, and Shane Salerno (Savages) have penned the scripts.
Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, and Stephen Lang will all be back in their respective roles.
Initially, Avatar 2 was lined up for US release in December 2014. That was moved to 2016, moved again to 2018 and now we’re looking at 2020. Time will tell if we have more delays to come.
Eight years after release, Avatar is still the highest-grossing (unadjusted) film of all time, boasting a massive $US2.78 billion worldwide. Cameron’s Titanic still holds the second position, with $US2.18 billion.
