Master filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo have delivered their third Marvel film following Captain America: Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, and what a job they’ve done.
Avengers: Infinity War isn’t only breaking box office records left, right and centre, it’s earned rave reviews (from us included) and audiences are absolutely loving it (currently with an 8.9 score on IMDB, making it the 12th highest-voted film of all time on the site). It’s more than a big brand spectacle and a culmination of Kevin Feige’s 10-year journey; it’s a damn good movie as is, with every department firing on all cylinders to deliver one of the best films in the MCU.
The Russos provide fans of the film with some awesome tidbits of knowledge in this new episode of Variety’s “Notes On a Scene” YouTube series, which finds filmmakers breaking down one particular moment from a film and providing some insight into their creative choices. Have no fear of spoilers (in case, for some weird reason, you’re yet to see the film); the scene being looked at here is the first encounter between the Guardians and Thor, which was previously included in this fun featurette.
It’s fascinating to find out how much thought and work goes into the most seemingly simple of scenes. The scene may just have six characters in conversation, but two of them are fully digital creations, others have digital elements, the set’s designed in a very specific way, the practical lighting and the lighting colour temperatures play an important part; the list goes on and on. They also touch on how they paid homage to a comedic technique they developed during their run on Arrested Development. Really makes you appreciate the little things that go mostly unnoticed when you’re munching down on that popcorn, eyes glued to the screen.
