The show is set in the near future and follows a team of elite astronauts – hailing from the United States, Russia, China, India, and Great Britain – set for a mission to Mars. Their high-stakes journey will take three years to complete; a period of time that their relationships on Earth and in space will be tested and will find them struggling to both stay alive and keep a focus on their goal. And all as the world watches.
The 30-second snippet shows an emotional Hilary Swank, who plays American astronaut Emma Green, shedding a tear as she looks at a picture of family while floating in zero gravity.
The series was created by Andrew Hinderaker (staff writer on Penny Dreadful) and Jessica Goldberg (creator of The Path) and features an executive producer team that includes Swank, Matt Reeves (The Batman director) and Edward Zwick (The Last Samurai director), among others.
Also starring Ato Essandoh, Mark Ivanir, Ray Panthaki, Vivian Wu, Talitha Bateman and Josh Charles, Away will be streaming on Netflix from September 4.
