There’s a fun scene in Baby Driver where our hero has his sunglasses taken off him, only to pull out another without a problem. And another.
Ansel Elgort’s Baby also has a number of iPods – including a pink one with sparkles – at his disposal; one for each mood.
There have been a number of theories circling the net as to why Baby has so many sunglasses and iPods and where he might be getting them. Well, while the answer isn’t all that exciting, it does make the most sense.
“I kind of figured that if Ansel’s character, Baby, has been stealing cars since he was 12, the main things he would have inherited from these stolen cars are people’s sunglasses and people’s iPods,” writer-director Edgar Wright told THR.
“So when he’s got other people’s iPod’s in the film, especially the pink and glittery one he has in the diner, that is not his iPod. That is some woman’s iPod that he essentially now owns. So he has her record collection. That’s the idea.”
There you have it. It’s also interesting to note that although Baby certainly has his favourite tracks and personal playlists, he’s more than open to finding potential hidden gems and gathering new faves from what others have on their devices.
Now, as for the metaphorical reason behind Baby’s use of sunglasses, Reddit user HYPERHERPADERP_ has an interesting take (spoilers):
