Australian thriller Bad Girl, starring Samara Weaving and Sara West, will be hitting US cinemas in November 2017.
US distributor The Asylum has picked up Bad Girl for US release, lining it up for 76 Cinemark screens across North America, including theatres across four locations in Los Angeles.
Bad Girl tells the story of Amy (West), a troubled teen who moves with her adoptive parents to a small Australian town. She soon finds herself growing close to clean-cut country girl Chloe (Weaving); an attraction that will have dire consequences for all.
“I’m very excited to be working with Cinemark and The Asylum and look forward to heading over to LA for Bad Girl’s North American release on 9th November,” director Fin Edquist said in a statement. “It’s great to be included in their slate of thrillers, a genre with a large and devoted US audience.”
Said Weaving, who is enjoying a solid high-profile run with recent credits including Ash vs Evil Dead, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and the title role in Netflix horror-comedy The Babysitter: “The experience was an eye opening journey into filmmaking for me. Sara West is the most talented actor I’ve had the pleasure of working with. The whole team was incredible and this independent film holds a very special place in my heart.”
Added producer Steve Kearney: “The is a such a fun and innovative company we are very pleased to have found a home amongst their amazing genre catalogue, a testament to Bad Girl being right up there with the best. And a 75 US Cinema release through Cinemark is more than we could have even hoped for – Americans love this film!”
It’s quite the feat for a small-budget Aussie picture to acquire US distribution, and it’s certainly well deserved here. “Bad Girl plays within the thriller genre nicely,” read our review of the film. “While this is an undeniably small movie, Edquist has choreographed a high-quality production.”
“At its core it’s a story about families, what they mean and how they are defined,” Edquist told The Reel Word in February. “At the time of writing I was going through a marriage breakdown, so that became the creative well I was drawing from, and these sort of themes were very much front of mind.”
Bad Girl is currently available on iTunes in Australia and will open in US cinemas on November 9 before hitting TVOD on April 24, 2018.
