Billy Bob Thornton is set to reprise his role as Willie Soke, aka Bad Santa, in the long-anticipated sequel to the 2003 comedy.
Bad Santa 2 has been given the green light by Miramax and Broad Green Pictures, the latter of which will be handling U.S. distribution. Sierra/Affinity will handle foregin sales.
Geyer Kosinski, whose worked on The Astronaut Farmer and TV’s Fargo, is on board to produce. There’s no word as to whether or not Bad Santa director Terry Zwigoff is returning at the helm.
“We’ve been waiting far too long to see Billy Bob’s Willie Soke mess with the holiday season in his own unique way,” Zanne Devine, Miramax’s EVP of Film & TV, said in a statement.
“We couldn’t be more excited to partner with Billy Bob, the entire creative and producing team, and Broad Green and Sierra/Affinity to bring back the outrageous humor and characters that made this movie brand iconic in the first place.”
We’ve been looking forward to a Bad Santa sequel since the first one came out and surprised by being crude, heartfelt and hilarious all at once; hopefully Bad Santa 2 manages to match its predecessor. Having Thornton back on board is certainly a good start.
Bad Santa 2 is set to begin production this coming January in Canada.
