‘Bad Times at the El Royale’ BTS Featurette Teases the Intriguing Star-Studded Thriller

Take a look at a new featurette to arrive for upcoming thriller Bad Times at the El Royale, featuring a cast that includes Jeff Bridges, Chris Hemsworth, Dakota Johnson and Jon Hamm.

There are a ton of questions surrounding this one. The primary one being: what is it actually about? The official synopsis describes the plot as seven strangers coming at an impasse of sorts at the titular hotel, a place with a dark past. The night will see each given one last shot redemption… before everything goes to hell. That’s about all that’s given away, and that trailer and the featurette below suggest there’s a lot more going on here than meets the eye.

“The more you start scratching at the surface, the more you realise it’s got a lot of secrets,” says Hamm in the newly released behind the scenes marketing piece. “It’s a wildly unpredictable, sinister thriller,” is how Hemsworth describes it. And then Johnson puts yet another question mark in the air with her description:  “A brutal love story between a bunch of strangers.”

The film comes from writer-director Drew Goddard, who doesn’t have a huge amount of directing work under his belt, but whose resume suggests we could be in for something special. Goddard was behind Netflix’s Daredevil series, wrote Cloverfield and The Martian, co-wrote World War Z, and directed and co-wrote The Cabin in the Woods. This film brings that latter credit to mind; Cabin in the Woods kicked off like a run-of-the-mill horror film, until it revealed a series of genre-bending twists. This could do the same. Speculate away.

Bad Time at the El Royale, also starring Cynthia Erivo, Cailee Spaeny, Lewis Pullman and Nick Offerman, will arrive in Australia on 11 October and will open in the US on 12 October.

Seven strangers, each with a secret to bury, meet at Lake Tahoe’s El Royale, a rundown hotel with a dark past. Over the course of one fateful night, everyone will have a last shot at redemption… before everything goes to hell. Jeff Bridges, Chris Hemsworth, Jon Hamm, Dakota Johnson and Cynthia Erivo lead an all-star cast in BAD TIMES AT THE EL ROYALE.
