A big one is taking shape here.
Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt are set to reunite in a potentially big project that’s starting to take shape. The stars of Disney’s upcoming Jungle Cruise film are attached to star in Ball and Chain, an adaptation of a 1999 comic by Scott Lobdell.
Deadline broke the news, reporting that the project comes with a script by Emily V. Gordon, who co-wrote 2017 feel-good comedy The Big Sick with husband and star Kumail Nanjiani. Blunt is also on board to produce with Kevin Misher (The Scorpion King, Richard Jewell), who’ll be working with Johnson’s production company Seven Bucks.
The Ball and Chain comics tell of Edgar and Mallory Bulson, a bickering couple who have basically decided to throw in the towel with their descending relationship. Everything changes when a mysterious meteor immerses the couple in extraterrestrial energies that bestow them with superpowers. Their powers, however, only work if they are together.
With the superhero angle and Johnson and Blunt on board to star, it’s no wonder there are a number of studios reportedly bidding to get this one. As of now, various reports are saying that Netflix may win it, which would expand the streamer’s business with the Johnson. The wrestler-turned-Hollywood megaster was in the middle of filming Netflix film Red Notice, with Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot, when the pandemic forced production to go on hold.
Jungle Cruise is still scheduled to be released in July, although that will likely be pushed.
