The cast continues to grow for Clint Eastwood’s next film as director, The Ballad of Richard Jewell, with Jon Hamm and Olivia Wilde just added.
The film will tell the story of Richard Jewell, who discovered a backpack with pipe bombs at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. He alerted police and was ultimately responsible for saving a large number of people thanks to the evacuation that unfolded. Unfortunately, he was later named a suspect, and the innocent hero was placed on trial by media and the public. He was eventually exonerated, but his confidence and health was permanently damaged. He died of a heart attack at age 44.
Set to play Jewell is Paul Walter Hauser, who played a memorable role in I Tonya and whose credits include Kingdom, BlacKkKlansman and Cobra Kai. Wilde will be playing reporter Kathy Scruggs, Hamm is on board as an FBI Agent, Sam Rockwell has been cast as Jewell’s defense attorney, and Kathy Bates will play Jewell’s mother.
The screenplay comes from Oscar-nominated scribe Billy Ray (The Hunger Games, Captain Phillips) and is an adaptation of the Vanity Fair article written by Marie Brenner. You can read that article in full right HERE.
