Check out the official trailer that’s arrived for Barbarians, an epic-looking German Netflix series that takes us back to AD 9.
The show depicts the famous Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, when an alliance of Germanic peoples tactfully crafted an ambush against Roman legions and their auxiliaries, which were led by Roman general Publius Quinctilius Varus (Gaetano Aronica). The alliance had quite the tactical advantage thanks to Arminius (Laurence Rupp), a Germanic officer with a Roman military education – having served as an officer under Varus’s auxilia.
“We know the Roman perspective because writings have been handed down from the Romans. But not from the Germanic side,” Rachel Eggebeen, Director of International Originals at Netflix, said in an interview with German news site DWDL. “The team at [co-production company] Gaumont has worked closely with historians, but at the same time also developed a great story with deep characters.”
History buffs, those interested in period warfare, and presumably those that can handle screen carnage will surely want to line this one up. The show consists of six eps: four directed by Steve Saint Leger, who helmed various episodes of Vikings, and two by Barbara Eder (CopStories, West of Liberty).
Look out for Barbarians to come in swinging on October 23rd.
