Ryan Gosling will be playing Ken in Warner Bros’ upcoming Barbie movie!
Margot Robbie will be starring in the film, set to play a live-action version of the popular Mattel fashion doll, and is also attached as a producer via her LuckyChap Entertainment banner.
The project has been in various stages of development for a number of years now, but is finally moving forward with Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird, Little Women) on board to direct. Gerwig will also be co-writing the screenplay with previous collaborator and real-life partner Noah Baumbach (Frances Ha, Mistress America).
Deadline broke the news of Gosling’s casting, reporting that the Oscar nominee has entered final negotiations to play Ken. Gosling had previously passed on the role due to a packed schedule, but with an extended pre-production period and WB’s steadfast desire to give him the role, the part finally went his way when an opening appeared.
Amy Schumer was once attached to star and write a Barbie film for Sony back in 2016. Following Schumer’s departure, Anne Hathaway circled for a period before Barbie‘s option at Sony expired and the project went to Warner Bros.
Getting Gosling on board is another big step for this long-gestating picture and word is that the film could finally be going into production in early 2022. Stay tuned.
Also ahead for Gosling is big Netflix action-thriller The Gray Man, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, with a cast that also includes Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Billy Bob Thornton, Jessica Henwick and Regé-Jean Page. That film is expected to hit Netflix in 2022.
