DC film Birds of Prey will be heading into production quite soon.
Margot Robbie, who’s reprising her Suicide Squad role as Harley Quinn and is also on board as producer, has confirmed to outlet Flickeringmyth that the female-focused superhero film will start filming in January 2019.
The actress also revealed that the Warner Bros. film will be coming to life with a “much smaller budget” than many of the tentpole superhero pics of late, which likely plays a factor in why it’s going in front of cameras nice and quickly. WB has had a number of projects circling a start for a while (The Flash, Green Lantern, etc) with no word on movement, so it’s refreshing to get news that a DC project is actually going ahead – and quickly.
In the comics, the Birds of Prey team features Quinn and a number of other female DC characters, including Batgirl, Black Canary and Huntress. There’s no word as yet on who, apart from Quinn, is guaranteed to appear in the film.
Robbie also confirmed that Quinn will be seen in a different costume/s this time around, telling Yahoo!: “Yes she’ll have new looks. There will be new Halloween costumes out there, one day.”
On board to direct the film is newcomer Cathy Yan, who Robbie pushed to have as helmer; and the screenplay comes from Christina Hodson, screenwriter of the upcoming Transformers spinoff, Bumblebee.
There’s no word on when Bird of Prey will be released, but many are expecting more info to be announced at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Hopefully we get a release date and/or some casting announcements there.
Apart from Birds of Prey, Robbie is also expected to play Quinn in Suicide Squad 2, to be directed by The Accountant helmer Gavin O’Connor; Gotham City Sirens, from Suicide director David Ayer; and a still-untitled Joker-Harley Quinn Project, with Leto to be back as the Joker.
