Fresh off playing The Joker in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, Jared Leto has signed up to join the impressive cast of the upcoming Blade Runner sequel.
Alcon Entertainment has announced that Leto will be taking on “a key role” in the sequel, which boasts a cast that includes Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Robin Wright, and Dave Bautista.
It’s yet another big project for Leto, who earned himself an Oscar with his standout performance in 2013’s Dallas Buyers Club.
“We are thrilled that Jared has agreed to play a key role in the Blade Runner sequel,” Alcon co-founders and co-CEO’s Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson said in a joint statement. “He is a phenomenal actor, and we know he will create a truly memorable, never before seen character.”
There aren’t many plot details known as yet, only that the film will be set several decades after the 1982 original, with Harrison Ford reprising his iconic role as Rick Deckard.
On board as director is Dennis Villeneuve, the Prisoners and Sicarrio helmer that has his first sci-fi film, Arrival, set for release late this year. The screenplay comes from Michael Green (Alien: Covenant) and Hampton Fancher, the latter of which co-wrote the original Blade Runner.
The as of yet untitled Blade Runner sequel, also set to star Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Carla Juri, Mackenzie Davis, Barkhad Abdi, David Dastmalchian, Hiam Abbass, Lennie James, will hit U.S. cinemas on October 6, 2017.
