Mizu’s blade is heading west. Netflix has released the official teaser trailer for Blue Eye Samurai season 2, sending its revenge-driven warrior towards London and confirming a January 2027 return. And there’s more good news for fans: season 3 is officially happening, although it will bring the acclaimed animated series to an end. Watch the teaser above and read on for the details.
Mizu’s Revenge Quest Hits Rough Waters
The new teaser picks up with Mizu (voiced by Maya Erskine) on the dangerous voyage from Japan to England, with Abijah Fowler very much still part of the equation. Their trip across the ocean looks anything but smooth, with raging seas battering the ship and Mizu eventually taking the wheel herself as the crossing turns increasingly desperate.

There’s not a huge amount of the new setting on display just yet, with Netflix wisely keeping much of it under wraps. Instead, the footage doubles down on what has always driven Mizu forward. “I choose revenge,” she declares, before the teaser ends on Mizu shipwrecked and the rather concerning sight of a sword being pointed directly at her throat.
Season 2 will continue Mizu’s bloody hunt in London, where Netflix says she will encounter new friends, old enemies and her own demons. The move also opens up an intriguing new side of the show’s world, dropping a swordswoman raised in isolated Edo-period Japan into 17th-century Europe.
Co-creator Amber Noizumi previously teased exactly what that cultural collision could mean for Mizu. “It would be an interesting part of Mizu’s personal journey to see how Europeans react to her,” she told Tudum following the season 1 finale in 2023. “What would she think of Western culture when she’s suddenly immersed in it? Are they all the monsters she thinks they are?”
Where Season 1 Left Mizu
For anyone needing a refresher, season 1 followed Mizu as she hunted the four white men who were illegally living in Japan around the time of her birth, believing one of them to be her father.
The finale saw her corner arms dealer Abijah Fowler (Kenneth Branagh), only to keep him alive after he revealed that the two remaining men on her list, Skeffington and Routely, could be found in London. Mizu was last seen sailing towards England with Fowler imprisoned below deck, making the stormy voyage shown in the teaser a direct continuation of that cliffhanger.
Fowler clearly won’t be the only familiar face returning. Maya Erskine is back as Mizu, while Brenda Song returns as Akemi, Darren Barnet as Taigen and Masi Oka as Ringo.
There’s Plenty Happening Back in Japan
While Mizu’s story expands beyond Japan, season 2 isn’t abandoning the characters she left behind.
Netflix has confirmed that Akemi and Taigen will be dealing with life inside Edo Castle under a dangerous new shogun, while Ringo searches for a new purpose. That should give season 2 two very different fronts to work with: Mizu navigating an entirely foreign world while political trouble continues to brew back home.
Creators Amber Noizumi and Michael Green return as writers and executive producers, with Erwin Stoff also executive producing. Jane Wu serves as supervising director and producer, while Blue Spirit remains the animation studio behind the series.
The first season proved to be a major awards success, winning four Primetime Creative Arts Emmys, including Outstanding Animated Program.
Netflix Has Already Ordered the Final Chapter
Netflix also used the occasion to confirm that Blue Eye Samurai has been renewed for a third and final season, with Mizu’s revenge saga set to reach its conclusion in 2028.
As reported by Deadline, season 2 has now finished production, while work on the third season is already underway. That should at least mean fans won’t be facing another wait quite as lengthy as the gap between the show’s 2023 debut and its upcoming return.
Blue Eye Samurai season 2 premieres on Netflix in January 2027. An exact date has yet to be announced. Season 1 is streaming now.
