Sony Pictures has greenlit a sequel to Blue Streak, the hit 1999 comedy that saw Martin Lawrence playing a thief who goes undercover as a detective to retrieve a hidden diamond.
The project is in early development, with no director or other cast members yet announced. While Lawrence is reportedly on board as a producer, there’s no official word as to whether he’ll be back as Miles. For now, it’s safe to assume the Bad Boys star will indeed be back in the role.
The screenplay is set to come from Cole Maliska, whose writing credits thus far have primarily been in television, writing on shows such as Quantico, Bull, Chicago P.D., and Almost Human.
As reported by Deadline, Lawrence will be producing the sequel through his production company Run Tel Dat. The producing team also includes Robert Lawrence, Rae Proctor, Stacy Lyles, and Toby Jaffe of RDV Films.
The original Blue Streak was a hit when it dropped in ’99. The action-comedy, which also starred Luke Wilson, Peter Greene, and Dave Chappelle, topped $US117 million at the worldwide box office from an estimated budget of $US65 million.
News of a Blue Streak sequel follows Lawrence’s recent success with Bad Boys: Ride or Die, which amassed $US404 million globally and pushed the overall Bad Boys franchise over the $US1 billion mark.
Lawrence is currently on his You All Know What It Is nationwide comedy tour, which has dates set until at least April 2025.
