The first trailer for Bridget Jones’s Baby has been released online, giving us our first look at the third film in the successful comedy franchise.
Renée Zellweger reprises her role as the titular British character, who finds out that she’s now pregnant. But who’s the father? Could it be her ex, Mark Darcy (once again played by Colin Firth), or new man on the block Jack Qwant (Patrick Dempsey).
Bridget Jones’s Diary helmer Sharon Maguire returns as director here, revisiting the franchise after Beeban Kidron (To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar) took the helm of Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason. Both films were huge hits, bringing in an accumulated pull of over $544 million worldwide.
The huge fanbase of Helen Fielding’s novels no doubt helped deliver that draw, so it’ll be interesting to see just how well Bridget Jones’s Baby does considering it’s been 12 years since the second film. Also, Zellweger hasn’t had a film since the barely-seen 2010 dramedy My Own Love Song, and before that she had 2009’s ill-received horror outing Case 39. Will the Academy Award Winner (Cold Mountain) be able to bring in the crowds like she once did? We’ll see.
The specific target audience should find appeal here. If you’ve enjoyed the franchise thus far, you’ll most likely be looking forward to Jones’s next chapter. Everyone else, the trailer below will let you know pretty quickly if this one’s for you.
Bridget Jones’s Baby will be hitting the U.S. on September 16.
