Sony has released a red band clip from upcoming horror film Brightburn, which takes the Superman-style superhero origin story the dark route.
We’ve been given snippets of this scene in previous trailers, but now get to see it play out with brutal detail. Young Brandon Breyer (Jackson A. Dunn) isn’t from this world. He holds terrifying power, and no, he doesn’t intend to be humanity’s saviour. In this particular moment, he’s got it out for a diner waitress.
Fingers crossed for this one. It’s a good idea to give the superhero origin tale an evil angle in an era where the genre is rocking multiplexes and small screens everywhere. It looks like a slickly crafted outing, and one that isn’t going to be going easy on the gore either.
Brightburn also stars Elizabeth Banks and David Denman. David Yarovesky (The Hive) directs from a screenplay penned by Mark Gunn and Briann Gunn. Guardians of the Galaxy helmer James Gunn is on board as producer.
The film opens in Australian cinemas on May 23 and hits the US on May 24.
What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister? With Brightburn, the visionary filmmaker of Guardians of the Galaxy and Slither presents a startling, subversive take on a radical new genre: superhero horror.
