Lex Luthor and Batman may have been onto something.
Take a look at the first trailer to arrive for BrightBurn, an upcoming horror film that puts a pitch black twist on those Superman-esque origins. To be clear, this isn’t a DC film and isn’t directly connected to the DC Comics character, but the intent is very clear.
Produced by Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker James Gunn and directed by David Yarovesky (The Hive), BrightBurn tells the story of a child from another world who crash-lands on Earth and is taken in by a couple (played by Elizabeth Banks and David Denman). He’s obviously not a normal child. And the twist: instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proves to be something far more sinister.
It’s a very good trailer, showcasing clear nods to Kal-El’s arrival and injecting hints of the Man of Steel score, before going dark – yes, even darker than DC – by giving us a superpowered, creepy-AF little boy. That fork moment (shudder).
BrightBurn, also starring Jackson A. Dunn, Neal Bains, Matt Jones, Meredith Hagner, Steve Agee, Becky Wahlstrom and Stephen Blackehart, will be opening in US cinemas on May 24, 2019.
