The first trailer has arrived for Transformers spinoff film, Bumblee.
Hailee Steinfeld plays soon-to-be-18 Californian girl Charlie, who, in 1987, discovers a battered yellow VW bug. Of course, this ain’t no ordinary vehicle.
This marks the first Transformers-related film not to be directed by Michael Bay (although he’s still attached as producer), which means we could be in for a breath of fresh air following the five films in the franchise. Kubo and the Two Strings helmer Travis Knight directs from a screenplay by Christina Hodson, who’s also attached to write upcoming DC films Birds of Prey and Batgirl.
The first trailer keeps the plot under wraps, but it does show off some enticing snippets, with reliable Steinfeld in the lead. Here’s hoping for an enjoyable, heartfelt family adventure film.
Bumblebee, also starring John Cena, Pamela Adlon, Kenneth Choi, Megan Pryce, and Martin Short, will arrive in Australia on December 20 and hits US cinemas on December 21.
Official synopsis for Bumblebee:
On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie, on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken.
When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.
