Get ready to hear Bumblebee’s voice.
Although it’s a prequel, upcoming Transformers spinoff Bumblebee will have the autobot finally speaking – and not via media such as radio and song snippets. So yeah, prequel… kinda. As Transformers franchise producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura explained to IGN, they’re “resetting” Bumblebee’s mythology.
“Since we were approaching this as an origin story, we felt that it was appropriate that you got to hear his voice,” di Bonaventura said. “That’s the simple logic that we employed. The longer term implication of that is different. But the short-term implication of that is, since we really are resetting the mythology, essentially, of who Bumblebee is. And so, that seemed to us to be the appropriate, to get the chance to hear what he sounds like.”
Voicing Bumblebee is Dylan O’Brien, who’s credits include the Maze Runner movies and MTV series Teen Wolf. Di Bonaventura explained that the actor’s voice carries the “youthful exuberance” and “trustworthiness” that they wanted the Transfomer to have. As for how the voice will be received, the producer says they have had a few audiences that responded positively and report that O’Brien has a “right and appropriate voice.”
We’ll find out whether an O’Brien-voiced Bumblebee works well when the Hailee Steinfeld-starring film arrives in Australia on December 20 and hits the US on December 21.
