The official trailer has arrived for Cape Fear, Apple TV’s upcoming psychological horror thriller led by Javier Bardem, Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson. Watch the trailer above, then read on for what we know.
Javier Bardem Brings Max Cady Back to Terrifying Life
The new trailer makes one thing clear pretty quickly: Javier Bardem’s Max Cady is not easing quietly back into society. The footage opens with Max asking, “What is your worst fear?”, setting the tone for what’s looking like a stylishly tense, nasty-looking series leaning hard into psychological horror territory.

Cape Fear follows happily married attorneys Anna and Tom Bowden, played by Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson, whose lives begin to unravel when Max is released from prison after 17 years. Max claims he was jailed for a murder he did not commit, and the Bowdens are shown to have hidden key information that could have changed his fate.
Naturally, Max does not appear to be interested in a polite legal follow-up. The trailer shows him making his way into the Bowdens’ lives, stalking, threatening and psychologically cornering the Bowden family, including their children, as he begins turning their comfortable life into something much darker. Bardem, who gave us one of cinema’s great villains with No Country for Old Men’s Anton Chigurh, looks to be having a good time in full menace mode here, with the footage teasing the kind of unhinged performance that should be one of the main reasons to tune in.
Bardem Says This Max Cady Is More Than a Figure of Disruption
The 10-episode format also gives the series more room to explore Max Cady beyond the immediate threat he poses. Speaking with Esquire, Bardem said the expanded runtime allowed the team to build “more of a specific backstory around Max Cady,” adding that the aim was to understand “where he’s coming from and what he has lost.”
“We can relate to his pain, because otherwise he will be just a figure of disruption,” Bardem said. “It should be more than that. He should be someone that we are not able to frame, even though we know who he is.”
That sounds like a key difference between this series and the earlier film versions. The trailer is absolutely selling Max as a terrifying force, but Bardem’s comments suggest the show is also interested in further exploring the damage behind the monster.
Bardem also drew a distinction between Max and Anton Chigurh, his Oscar-winning No Country role. “Max Cady has a goal and Anton Chigurh does not have any goal,” he said, describing Max as “a man who’s broken and has feelings and has a goal—a goal that has to do with revenge.”
“One is human, a broken human being, which is Max Cady,” Bardem added. “Another one is just a violent act of fate.”
A New Take on a Classic Thriller Story
Cape Fear is inspired by both John D. MacDonald’s 1957 novel The Executioners and the earlier film adaptations: the 1962 movie starring Gregory Peck and the 1991 remake directed by Martin Scorsese and produced by Steven Spielberg.
The 1991 version, of course, had Robert De Niro delivering one of his most memorable villain turns as Cady, with Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange and Juliette Lewis as the Bowdens. Robert Mitchum played Cady in the 1962 film.
The Cast and Creatives Behind Apple TV’s Cape Fear
The series comes with a pretty stacked creative team. Nick Antosca serves as showrunner, creator and executive producer, following work on shows such as Hannibal, Into the Dark, Candy and Chucky. He also co-produces through Eat the Cat with Alex Hedlund.
Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg are both executive producers, bringing this new take full circle after their involvement in the 1991 film. Bardem and Adams also executive produce, with Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey producing via Amblin Television.
Morten Tyldum, whose credits include The Imitation Game and Apple TV’s Silo, directs the pilot and also executive produces.
Alongside Bardem, Adams and Wilson, the ensemble includes Joe Anders and Lily Collias as the Bowden children. Malia Pyles, CCH Pounder, Jamie Hector and Anna Baryshnikov also appear in supporting roles.
When Does Cape Fear Premiere on Apple TV?
Cape Fear will make its global debut on Apple TV on Friday, June 5, 2026, launching with its first two episodes.
The 10-episode limited series will then continue with new episodes released weekly, leading up to the finale on July 31, 2026.
