Aussie actor Ben Mendelsohn could be entering the MCU as a supervillain.
Mendelsohn is apparently in talks to join the cast of Captain Marvel as the film’s villain. If cast, Mendelsohn will be facing off against Oscar winner Brie Larson, who will be suiting up as the titular comic book heroine.
Variety broke the news regarding the potential casting, reporting that the actor would most likely be cast as the leader of the Skrulls, an extraterrestrial race of shapeshifters bent on invading earth.
The outlet also reports that directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, known for It’s Kind of a Funny Story and Mississippi Grind (which also starred Mendelsohn), crafted the film’s narrative with the actor in mind. Mendelsohn apparently “quickly agreed to pursue the role”.
Marvel movie producer extraordinaire Kevin Feige said at Comic-Con that the film would take place in the ’90s, prior to the Avengers coming together. It is expected that Samuel L. Jackson will be included as Nick Fury, so yeah… we could be finding out exactly what happened to that eye.
Mendelsohn, who gave an Emmy-winning performance in Netflix series Bloodline and played Star Wars villain Orson Krennic in spinoff film Rogue One, will next be seen playing King George VI in Joe Wright’s Winston Churchill drama Darkest Hour. His upcoming features also include Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One and Robin Hood, the latter of which will see him portray the Sheriff of Nottingham.
Captain Marvel is scheduled to open in US cinemas on March 8, 2019.
