Disney•Pixar are currently in the process of crafting Cars 3, and the first synopsis and concept art have been released to start building up the hype.
Owen Wilson is back voicing Lighting McQueen for the third chapter in the successful franchise, which tells of a world filled with anthropomorphic vehicles.
The film’s official synopsis:
Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of Cruz Ramirez, an eager young race technician with her own plan to win, plus inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet and a few unexpected turns. Proving that #95 isn’t through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage!
Brian Fee, a storyboard artist on Cars and Cars 2, takes the director’s chair this time around.
“Having worked on the first and second Cars movies, I’m honoured to be directing Cars 3,” Fee said in a statement.
“These characters are like family to me, so it’s very special to be able to follow Lightning McQueen as we dig even deeper into racing and McQueen’s relationship to the sport than we ever have before. The mix of thrills and emotion in the film is going to be really special.”
It’s somewhat surprising that Disney•Pixar have been so keen to keep this franchise rolling, considering the mixed reception afforded to the first two films and those Planes spinoffs. Still, the numbers speak for themselves; Cars and Cars 2 earned over $US1 billion combined.
You can check out the concept art below, which sees Lighting McQueen in the middle of a beach-set car race.
Cars 3 is scheduled to arrive in Australia on June 15, 2017 and will hit the U.S. on June 16, 2017.
