British actor Charlie Cox, celebrated for his role in Boardwalk Empire, will star in the new Marvel/Netflix Daredevil series. Recently, news broke that Drew Goddard would be stepping down as showrunner of the project. His replacement, Steven S. DeKnight (Spartacus, Buffy: The Vampire Slayer), will carry on with the series. The announcement of Cox as the lead comes only days after this change up.
Charlie Cox (Stardust, The Merchant of Venice) will play Matt Murdock, a blind lawyer who doubles as a crime fighter. In a press release Marvel described the role: “Blinded as a young boy but imbued with extraordinary senses, Matt Murdock fights against injustice by day as a lawyer, and by night as the super hero Daredevil in modern day Hell’s Kitchen, New York City.”
Marvel reports that Daredevil will run for 13 episodes. The company has announced that this is the first of four Marvel properties to transform into series. Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage and the miniseries The Defenders will also soon be under production.
Marvel Television will produce Daredevil, in association with ABC Studios. Drew Goddard will stay on as a consultant for the project.
Daredevil is expected to begin filming in New York this summer. Netflix will be releasing the series next year.
