The Angels have officially been cast in Sony’s planned Charlie’s Angels reboot.
Joining Stewart in the team of Angels is Naomi Scott (pictured above, centre), who played Kimberly (the Pink Ranger) in last year’s Power Rangers reboot and will soon be seen as Jasmine in Disney’s upcoming live-action Aladdin movie, and British newcomer Ella Balinska (pictured above, right), whose credits include Midsomer Murders and The Athena.
The upcoming film is to be directed by actress-filmmaker Elizabeth Banks, making her sophomore feature directorial effort following 2015’s Pitch Perfect 2. Banks has various roles here. She will also be playing Bosley, the angels’ handler, who was voiced by Dynasty‘s John Forsythe in the original series and played by Bill Murray in the Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu-starring film versions. Plus, Banks also co-wrote the screenplay alongside Jay Basu (Monsters: Dark Continent), co-writer of the upcoming The Girl in the Spider’s Web and attached to Sony’s long-gestating Metal Gear Solid adaptation and a planned remake of Labyrinth.
The new Charlie’s Angels film will be following a new team of Angels working for the mysterious Charlie, whose Townsend Agency has grown considerably and gone global since the original films, now providing security and intelligence services to a variety of private clients with offices and teams located around the world.
This reboot will be putting Stewart back into the blockbuster scene. Following her breakout role as Bella Swan in The Twilight Saga, Stewart has stuck to mostly indie films, although she did play the title heroine in Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman.
The new Charlie’s Angels is currently scheduled to hit US cinemas on 27 September 2019.
