Chloe Moretz has been cast as the lead in Working Title and Universal’s upcoming live-action movie version of The Little Mermaid.
According to Variety, Moretz is to play the title character in a film that currently has Notting Hill, Love Actually and War Horse writer Richard Curtis in talks to pen the screenplay.
Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation) was attached to direct, but has since dropped off the project, with some of Variety’s insiders suggesting Moretz’s casting was a point of conflict for the director. Apparently, it’s possible Coppola wanted to have less of a star attached to the lead. Regardless, no new director has been named as yet.
Working Title and Universal have been eyeing Moretz as their lead for a while now, and word is that Coppola’s departure pushed them to bring Curtis on board to pen a version of the screenplay that will attract the type of cast and crew they’re after. We’ll keep you informed as to who jumps on board.
Moretz will next be seen in the sci-fi thriller The 5th Wave, set to open in the U.S. on January 15, 2016.
