Chris Evans Will Be in Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Marvel Studios

It appears that Chris Evans is making his way back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (again)! Multiple reports have announced that the actor has accepted a role in Marvel Studios’ upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.

Slated for release on May 1, 2026, the film will be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, the filmmaking duo behind celebrated Marvel outings Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.

The Wrap first broke the news, later confirmed by Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter. While Marvel remains predictably tight-lipped about Evans’ role, Avengers: Doomsday is expected to dive deep into multiverse territory, with characters from across the MCU’s sprawling timeline reportedly set to appear. Naturally, speculation is rampant: will Evans once again don the star-spangled shield as Steve Rogers/Captain America? Or, seeing as anything goes in the multiverse, could he reignite his role as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch, the Fantastic Four character he cheekily brought back to life in Deadpool & Wolverine?

Evans’ MCU arc seemingly wrapped up with Avengers: Endgame (2019), where Steve Rogers opted for a quieter life in the past with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) before returning to pass the Captain America mantle to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie). It felt like a definitive goodbye, but Marvel’s love of alternate timelines has always left the door slightly ajar.

Evans has been candid about his careful approach to reprising roles. “I’ll never say never, just because it was such a wonderful experience. But I’m also very precious with it,” Evans said in a 2023 interview with GQ. “It’s something that I am very proud of. And like I said, sometimes I can’t believe it even happened. And I wouldn’t want the black eye if it felt like a cash grab or if it didn’t live up to expectations or if it just felt like it wasn’t connected to that original thing.” We’ll see what creative fuel has triggered his decision to return now; hopefully Avengers: Doomsday is aiming for more than just nostalgia.

Adding to the intrigue, Avengers: Doomsday will also feature Robert Downey Jr., this time taking on the role of Doctor Doom—a fascinating pivot for the actor synonymous with Tony Stark/Iron Man. With Evans, Downey Jr., and the Russo brothers all on board, Avengers: Doomsday is sure shaping up to be a major moment for the MCU.
