‘Clown in a Cornfield’ Trailer Unleashes a New Killer Clown

[Article updated with Australian release date.]

A fresh nightmare is lurking in the fields, and his name is Frendo. The official trailer for Clown in a Cornfield has arrived, offering a look at what could be horror’s next memorable killer clown. Directed by Tucker & Dale vs. Evil filmmaker Eli Craig, this slasher flick is based on Adam Cesare’s 2020 novel of the same name—a Bram Stoker Award-winning tale that blends ’80s-style carnage with modern sensibilities. Take a look above.

The story follows Quinn (Katie Douglas, Ginny & Georgia), a teenager who moves to the struggling town of Kettle Springs with her father, hoping for a fresh start. What she finds instead is a community in decline, torn apart ever since the local corn syrup factory burned down. But economic hardship turns out to be the least of their problems. Meet Frendo, a grinning clown who doesn’t exactly abide by his name – he’s a knife-wielding menace.

If the trailer is any indication, it could be a winner for director Eli Craig—whose Tucker & Dale vs. Evil gained a strong cult following for its sharp humour and fun sendup of genre cliches. This marks his third feature following 2017 Netflix release Little Evil, a horror-comedy starring Adam Scott and Evangeline Lilly.

Clown in a Cornfield, with a cast that also includes Kevin Durand, Will Sasso, and Carson MacCormac, will be slashing its way into Australian cinemas on May 8th and U.S. cinemas on May 9th. The film will be making its way to streaming service Shudder sometime after that.
