Warner Bros. has dropped a new trailer for Collateral Beauty, the upcoming drama featuring an all-star cast led by Will Smith.
The film finds Smith playing a man who is unable to move past a tragedy. Retreating from life more and more, he starts to question the universe by writing letters to Love, Time and Death, played by Keira Knightley, Jacob Latimore and Helen Mirren respectively. When they come into contact with him and offer up some answers, he finds himself on a journey to understanding the beauty and meaning that can arise from sadness and tragic events.
It’s hard to say with this one. It certainly appears to be a little too saccharine (you will feel, damn it!), but there’s a damn strong cast – including Kate Winslet, Naomie Harris, Edward Norton and Michael Pena – and the emotion could work well. If done well, this may be just the right type of sentimental picture to provide a tear-jerking, feel-good time at the movies during the Christmas season. Hopefully.
Collateral Beauty, directed by David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada, Marley & Me) and written by Allan Loeb (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, The Switch), will open in the US on December 16 and arrives in Australia on January 12.
Synopsis for Collateral Beauty:
When a successful New York advertising executive suffers a great tragedy he retreats from life. While his concerned friends try desperately to reconnect with him, he seeks answers from the universe by writing letters to Love, Time and Death. But it’s not until his notes bring unexpected personal responses that he begins to understand how these constants interlock in a life fully lived, and how even the deepest loss can reveal moments of meaning and beauty.
