It’s been a very long wait for Community fans, but Donald Glover has now offered one of the more promising updates yet on the long-awaited movie — and this time, it sounds like real movement may finally be happening.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Glover gave a fresh progress update on Community: The Movie, suggesting the project may at last be inching out of development limbo.

Donald Glover Says Something Could Happen “Soon”
“We’re working on it right now,” Glover said. “I know everybody’s been saying that for forever, but I swear to you, I’m not lying about this. I really think that something is gonna happen soon.”
Fans have heard hopeful updates before, of course, but this one lands a little differently. It feels a touch more immediate, which is no small thing for a project tied to one of TV’s most famously delayed promises.
Glover also revealed that the cast is still actively in touch. “We were just on the text chain talking about it,” he said, before adding, “It’s pretty lovey dovey, but when you’re on the other side of the world, you will wake up to 83 messages.”
The Movie Has Been a Long Time Coming
Peacock officially ordered the Community movie in 2022, with Joel McHale, Alison Brie, Danny Pudi, Gillian Jacobs, Jim Rash, and Ken Jeong confirmed to return. Yvette Nicole Brown has also said she’ll be back, revealing in 2024 that the script was being reworked to include Shirley.
Dan Harmon co-wrote the screenplay with former Community writer Andrew Guest, and the project was later named as one of the productions set to benefit from California film and TV tax credits.
The road there hasn’t exactly been smooth. McHale previously told GQ that fans could “fully blame my schedule” for part of the delay, pushing back on speculation that Glover’s packed calendar was the main holdup. Mind you, that interview was in June 2024.
Still One of TV’s Most Wanted Follow-Ups
Originally airing from 2009 to 2015 on NBC and later Yahoo Screen, Community built a passionate fanbase through its oddball humour, sharp meta streak, and the chemistry of its ensemble.
That’s why the movie still matters. This isn’t just nostalgia doing the heavy lifting. People genuinely want to see this cast back together, especially after all these years of false starts, scheduling issues, and near-misses.
There’s still no release date, so nobody should start counting down just yet. Still, Glover’s latest update makes Community: The Movie feel a little less like an inside joke and a little more like something that might actually happen.
