Yes, the long-awaited Community: The Movie is still very much on the way, and Ken Jeong, who played the chaotic Ben Chang in the series, has shared his reaction to reading the film’s screenplay.
“It made me emotional and just brought me right back,” Jeong said in an interview with TV Insider, while refraining from revealing too much. “That’s all I’m legally allowed to say.” Jeong also shared his excitement about the possibility of reuniting with the cast on set, saying, “I think being on set experiencing that again [will be] so gratifying. Words can’t even express.”
While fans have waited for updates since Peacock announced the movie in 2022, Jeong reassured, “It’s not a matter of if, it is a matter of when. There is a script, there is a plan. We just don’t know when [it will happen]. Once that’s agreed upon, it’ll be magical and real emotional.”
Yvette Nicole Brown, who plays Shirley Bennett, was also recently vocal about her enthusiasm and provided additional details on the movie’s development. In an October 2024 interview with The Wrap, Brown revealed that the script is being updated to reflect her now-confirmed involvement. “For a minute, I wasn’t confirmed, so they have to now change some things, because I am confirmed,” she explained. “And they can now change some things for Shirley’s character as well.”
Brown also acknowledged the logistical hurdles the production faces, particularly in coordinating the schedules of its ensemble cast. “It’s just now trying to get all these puzzle pieces together of everybody’s schedule. We were scheduled to do it, and then the strike happened. And now it’s like trying to figure out when is so-and-so done with their show? When is so-and-so done with their movie? When is so-and-so off tour?”
Alison Brie, who played Annie Edison, has similarly praised what she has read. “I’ve read the script, and it’s so funny,” Brie said during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live in April 2024. As for her character, Brie told a fan that she hopes Annie “hasn’t changed too much” and that she “loved her just the way she was.”
While no precise date for a production start has been announced, it is known that the film will be shot in Los Angeles, with support from California’s tax credit programme. Much of the original cast is expected to return, including Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Donald Glover, and Gillian Jacobs. Chevy Chase, however, is not expected to reprise his role as Pierce Hawthorne.
Here’s hoping that the stars align soon to make this long-awaited reunion a reality!
