This is the feature debut for director and co-writer Ricky Staub (his previous IMDb credits have him as an assistant to producer Sam Mercer on films such as Snow White and the Huntsman and The Last Airbender), adapting the 2009 book Ghetto Cowboy by author by Gregory Neri.
Concrete Cowboy tells the story of a troubled teen (McLaughlin) who is sent to live with his estranged father (Elba) in North Philadelphia. There, young Cole learns about the vibrant urban-cowboy subculture his father is deeply immersed in and is also forced to face both his own troubled path and his broken relationship with his father.
A potentially powerful film here – and one that appears to be giving McLaughlin quite the platform to show off those acting skills. Elba, of course, looks to be putting in great work as well. Looking forward to seeing this one.
Concrete Cowboy, also starring Jharrel Jerome, Byron Bowers, Lorraine Toussaint and Clifford “Method Man” Smith, will be streaming on Netflix from April 2nd.
