Courteney Cox is officially returning to the Scream slasher horror franchise.
Cox is set to reprise her role as news reporter Gale Weathers, joining fellow returning castmember David Arquette (back as Dwight “Dewey” Riley) in the upcoming fifth film of the franchise. The Friends and Cougar Town alum took to Instagram with a post of the classic Ghostface mask, along with text saying, “I can’t wait to see this face again.”
Scream 5 is to be directed by by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the Ready or Not and Devil’s Due helmers who are part of a three-member filmmaking group known as Radio Silence. The third person in the group is Chad Villella, who is on board to executive produce alongside franchise creator Kevin Williamson (writer of the first, second and fourth Scream films).
“We can’t imagine Scream without the iconic Gale Weathers and are so incredibly thrilled and humbled to have the opportunity to work with Courteney,” Radio Silence told Deadline, the outlet that broke the news of Cox’s casting. “We’re absolute mega fans of her work and we’re so excited to join her in the next chapter of the Scream saga!”
James Vanderbilt (Murder Mystery, Amazing Spider-Man) and Guy Busick (Ready or Not, Castle Rock) wrote the script for the fifth Scream, which is currently lined up for a theatrical release in 2021.
