‘Crystal Lake’ Teaser Trailer: What to Know About the ‘Friday the 13th’ Prequel Series

Camp Crystal Lake is reopening, and Jason Voorhees is not yet the killer audiences need to fear. The teaser trailer has arrived for Crystal Lake, A24’s Friday the 13th prequel series, with Linda Cardellini taking centre stage as Pamela Voorhees. Watch the teaser above and read on for what to know.

What Does the Crystal Lake Teaser Reveal?

The footage opens with camp counsellors sharing the town’s darkest story around a fire: a child drowned in Crystal Lake the previous summer. “There’s something in these woods, and all it knows how to do… is kill.”

That child is Jason Voorhees, although this is long before the hockey mask, supernatural resurrections and decades of slaughter that turned him into a horror icon. Here, Jason is still a young boy, played by Callum Vinson, while his mother desperately searches the water and screams his name.

Make way for panicked townspeople, a machete raised for the kill, Pam covered in blood. It’s a suitably ominous glimpse at how an apparently ordinary community becomes one of horror cinema’s most cursed locations.

The original 1980 Friday the 13th played as something of a whodunnit, eventually revealing Pamela Voorhees, played by Betsy Palmer, as the killer targeting the counsellors she blamed for Jason’s death. While her son would become the face of the franchise, Crystal Lake turns its attention to the woman who began the bloodshed.

Who Does Linda Cardellini Play in Crystal Lake?

The eight-episode series follows Pam as she struggles with the aftermath of her son’s drowning. Her already fragile existence is disrupted when two strangers arrive at her door and begin digging into her past, setting off a disturbing chain of events that leaves the town questioning who she really is and what horrors may be hiding beneath Crystal Lake’s quiet surface.

The role gives Cardellini the chance to explore a crucial but relatively unknown figure in the franchise’s mythology.

“She’s only in such a small fraction of the movies and there’s very little actually known about her, but she’s the inciting incident in some ways,” Cardellini told Entertainment Weekly. “She’s an important piece of the puzzle, but a relatively unknown one.”

Creator and showrunner Brad Caleb Kane (Warrior, Tokyo Vice, It: Welcome to Derry) said the production wanted to explore Pam’s psychological collapse, the bond she shared with Jason and what happens when the person around whom she built her life is suddenly taken away.

“We wanted to see her relationship with Jason and what his death kicks off in her,” Kane explained to EW, describing the series as a character piece about a woman attempting to regain some stability while the people and circumstances around her make that increasingly impossible.

Cardellini was Kane’s first and only choice for the role after he watched her performance opposite Christina Applegate in Netflix’s Dead to Me. That acclaimed dark comedy repeatedly shifted between grief, guilt, emotional chaos and increasingly disastrous decisions, making Cardellini an intriguing fit for another woman struggling to hold herself together as her life spirals out of control.

When Is Crystal Lake Set?

Although the franchise’s established timeline placed Jason’s drowning in 1957, Kane has taken some creative liberties and moved Crystal Lake into the 1970s.

The change allows the series to draw inspiration from the period’s paranoid conspiracy thrillers, shifting social attitudes, martial arts cinema and other pieces of American culture that helped shape the world in which the original Friday the 13th was conceived.

Kane has described the series as a “mixtape of genre”, with different townspeople seemingly living inside their own types of stories until their paths collide with Pam’s increasingly violent reality.

“The tone is odd,” Cardellini said. “It is many things at once, but it works as this fun ride.”

Despite the character-driven approach and broader small-town mystery, Kane has made it clear that Crystal Lake remains a slasher at heart.

Do Other Friday the 13th Characters Return?

Several characters from the original film have been expanded for the series. Danielle Kotch and Phoenix Parnevik play Claudette and Barry, the amorous camp counsellors who became Pamela’s first victims in the 1980 film. Rather than appearing briefly before meeting their bloody ends, the pair will be given more substantial roles.

Cameron Scoggins plays Officer Dorf, while Nick Cordileone appears as Ralph, the drunken local known for warning visitors that Camp Crystal Lake carries a death curse.

The series also introduces William Catlett as local police chief Levon Brooks, a longtime friend of Pam whose loyalties may prove complicated. Devin Kessler plays his journalist sister, Brianna, while Gwendolyn Sundstrom appears as Grace, a fellow camper and friend of Jason.

Kane created, wrote and executive produced Crystal Lake, following his work on another major horror prequel series, IT: Welcome to Derry. Original Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller is also among the executive producers, with A24 producing alongside Horror, Inc.

When Is Crystal Lake Released?

All eight episodes of Crystal Lake premiere on Peacock in the U.S. on October 15 and arrive on Stan in Australia on October 16.
