‘Crystal Lake’ Trailer: Peacock Series Unleashes Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees, Jason’s Mother

Before Jason Voorhees became the hockey-masked killer of Friday the 13th, there was his mother. The full trailer has arrived for A24’s Crystal Lake, with Linda Cardellini starring as Pamela Voorhees, a grieving mother still searching for answers nearly a year after her son’s drowning. And one question refuses to go away: where is Jason’s body? Watch the trailer above and get the details below.

Jason Is Gone. Pamela Isn’t Moving On.

The original 1980 Friday the 13th pulled off its biggest surprise by revealing that Jason wasn’t the killer at all. His mother, Pamela Voorhees, had been murdering Camp Crystal Lake’s counsellors in revenge for the drowning of her son. Crystal Lake winds the clock back before that bloodbath, with nearly a year having passed since young Jason, played by Callum Vinson, drowned in the lake.

Everyone around Pamela seems ready to call it a tragedy and move forward. Pamela very much isn’t. Police chief Levon Brooks (William Catlett), an old friend who appears to have remained close to her through the aftermath, urges her to start healing.

“I don’t want to heal,” Pamela tells him. “I want to find my son.” Later, she admits: “I’ve just had this feeling that he was still out there.”

More troubling is the question still eating away at her: “Where is Jason’s body?” The trailer makes clear that his death will not remain a sad local story for long. People start dying, rumours spread and authorities scramble for explanations, while Pamela grows increasingly volatile as whatever happened at Crystal Lake begins looking far less straightforward than the official story suggests.

“What do you think the good people of Crystal Lake would say if they knew what you and Jason really were?” a man says as he grabs her. “Go to hell,” Pamela replies, before the footage cuts to her swinging a machete.

For one of horror’s most important killers, Pamela has always been something of a mystery. Betsy Palmer’s performance defined the original movie’s final stretch, but the franchise quickly moved on to Jason and never spent much time exploring the woman whose grief started the entire Voorhees killing spree.

Cardellini told Entertainment Weekly that this blank space was part of the appeal. “She’s an important piece of the puzzle, but a relatively unknown one,” Cardellini said.

The series appears ready to fill that gap without simply turning Pamela into a victim waiting to snap. Two strangers arrive asking questions about her past, a journalist starts digging and old relationships resurface, while the trailer increasingly suggests that Jason’s drowning may be only one layer of whatever has been festering around Crystal Lake. Pamela’s grief is clearly central, but there appears to be much more in her history waiting to surface.

This Is More Than Camp Counsellors Running from a Knife

Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane knows something about expanding famous horror mythology. He previously served as co-showrunner on IT: Welcome to Derry, while his credits also include Tokyo Vice and Warrior.

Rather than treating Crystal Lake as somewhere that simply happens to have a very unfortunate summer camp, the series is digging into the people who live there, the police force, its history and the secrets buried beneath the place long before Jason starts lumbering around in a mask.

Kane told TV Insider that the title itself points to the larger canvas. “This was called Crystal Lake, and we were doing a story about the town and a prequel about Jason’s mom,” Kane said.

The trailer reflects that wider approach, mixing the Voorhees story with police investigations, journalism and long-buried secrets around the town itself.

The Slasher Carnage Is Coming

Kane has said the season deliberately makes viewers wait for the more familiar slasher machinery to kick in. During a panel, as quoted by Bloody Disgusting, he described the early run this way: “There’s a little bit of paranoid conspiracy thriller here, and it’s a psychological devolution or evolution… but where’s Friday the 13th?”

Kane added that Pamela eventually goes “full Friday the 13th“, with the build giving way to a series of kills intended to deliver the kind of hack-and-slash carnage longtime fans expect from the movies. Grief, paranoia and family history may be doing much of the heavy lifting early on, but the trailer’s bloodier flashes make it clear where things are ultimately heading.

Some very familiar names are getting much more screen time this time around. Danielle Kotch and Phoenix Parnevik play Claudette and Barry, the two counsellors whose romantic encounter ended with both of them dead in the opening of the original film. Cameron Scoggins plays Officer Dorf, while Nick Cordileone takes on Ralph, better known to fans as the doom-spouting Crazy Ralph.

New characters include Catlett’s Levon Brooks and Devin Kessler as his journalist sister Brianna, who begins looking into the deaths around town. Gwendolyn Sundstrom plays Grace, a friend of young Jason who becomes another significant figure in Pamela’s life.

Kane has also teased Easter eggs and recreations from the movies, while Cardellini has revealed that her take on Pamela includes at least one visual nod involving that very familiar sweater. She isn’t attempting a Betsy Palmer impression, with the series instead looking to show how this younger Pamela could eventually become the woman audiences met in 1980.
