Jon Bernthal, known for his roles in Wolf of Wall Street, Fury, and TV’s The Walking Dead, has been cast as The Punisher in the second season of Marvel-Netflix’s Daredevil.
Bernthal will be playing Frank Castle, a war veteran who becomes the ruthless vigilante known as The Punisher after his family is murdered by the mob. The Punisher aims to clean up the streets by any means necessary, more than willing to employ torture and murder if need be.
The Punisher’s ruthless tactics to rid New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen of its bad guys is bound to bring him on a bit of a collision course with Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil, who tried his best to hold a no-murder policy when taking down the baddies in season 1.
“Jon Bernthal brings an unmatched intensity to every role he takes on, with a potent blend of power, motivation and vulnerability that will connect with audiences,” Marvel Head of Television Jeph Loeb said in a statement.
“Castle’s appearance will bring dramatic changes to the world of Matt Murdock and nothing will be the same.”
Marco Ramirez and Doug Petrie are taking over from Steven S. DeKnight as showrunners in the second season of Netflix’s first Marvel team-up. Jessica Jones, the second of four planned Marvel outings before the leads join for cross-over series The Defenders, will be hitting Netflix towards the latter end of this year.
While Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter have received mixed opinions across the board, Daredevil was widely considered to be a huge move in the right direction for Marvel’s television presence. We loved it, and are more than looking forward to the second chapter of Murdock’s story. With Bernthal on board as one of Marvel’s more violent characters, season 2 is looking downright promising.
The second season of Marvel’s Daredevil will premiere on Netflix sometime in 2016.
